Ernest “Tony” Gonzales

Congressman Tony Gonzales is a dedicated patriot with twenty years of military experience. Abandoned by his father at the age of two months, Tony knew he had to work hard to get ahead in life. At the age of 18, he left high school to join the military and provide a path to success for himself and his family.

As a career cryptologist in the United States Navy, he rose to the highest enlisted rank of Master Chief Petty Officer for his support of combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. With multiple deployments to the Middle East and Asia, Tony has firsthand experience about the security challenges that face our country and the international community at large.

Cybersecurity

As cyber-attacks in the U.S. increase, so does the need for cybersecurity. Harnessing his background as a Navy cryptologist, Congressman Gonzales has made it a top priority in Congress to introduce legislation, secure funding, and work with experts to strengthen our nation’s cybersecurity and defense.

  • Introduced the National Digital Reserve Corps Act: This legislation would form a National Digital Reserve Corps, harnessing the power of private sector, AI, and cybersecurity experts to bolster the cybersecurity efforts of our federal government.
  • Hosted Cybersecurity Roundtables: Congressman Gonzales hosted two cybersecurity roundtables, in San Antonio and D.C., with members of Congress, the House Homeland Security Committee and industry experts to discuss ways the U.S. can strengthen our cyber defense.
  • Appointed to the American Security Task Force: The task force, led by Rep. John Katko (R-NY-24), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Homeland Security, focuses on finding conservative solutions to securing our communities, preparing our country for developing threats and protecting future generations of Americans to come.
  • Secured Funds for Texas’ Cybersecurity: In the FY2022 Homeland Security Appropriations Bill, Congressman Gonzales secured funds for cybersecurity infrastructure to better prepare our communities against acts of terrorism, ransomware attacks or other emergencies.
  • Updated the VA’s Enterprise Cybersecurity Strategy: Congressman Gonzales worked with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) to update and bolster their Enterprise Cybersecurity Strategy for the first time in three years.

Economy

Congressman Gonzales believes government should have a very limited role in our economy. This means lower taxes, less regulations, support for small businesses and very little government intervention. It’s important we foster an economic environment that encourages job growth, increases wages and supports small businesses. Most importantly, American families should take home more money than they give to our government.

The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act was a crucial first step in cutting taxes for millions of Americans. He will continue to find new ways to relieve Texans from the heavy burden of government regulation and high taxes.

Education

Education is the greatest equalizer. During his time in the military, Congressman Gonzales' children have attended various types of schools – he believes parents and families understand their students better than the federal government. This is why he is a strong advocate of school choice.

Congressman Gonzales also supports all forms of educational opportunities from charter schools to trade programs. Universities, colleges and trade schools are all equally important and beneficial to our communities.

Energy

Texas is our country’s lead producer of oil and natural gas. It’s important that we are free from regulations in order to tap into our state’s full energy potential. Not only does it provide local revenue and jobs, but it allows our country to be less dependent on foreign actors as sources of energy.

Immigration & Border Security

Border security is national security. With 800 miles of U.S.-Mexico border, Texas’s 23rd district has the largest stretch of the border territory of any Congressional District. Any decisions made regarding immigration and border security directly impact our communities. Because of that, border security and immigration are always at the forefront of Congressman Gonzales' mind.

He believes open borders are not an option but completely closed borders are not either. It’s important we have a safe, fair legal immigration process while keeping our communities safe. Anyone who wants to come to America and live the American dream should have a chance to do so - but they must do it legally.

Military & Veterans

Congressman Gonzales served our nation in the U.S. Navy for twenty years, retiring as a Master Chief Petty Officer, the highest enlisted ranking in the military. Because of this, he has a deep understanding of what our men and women in uniform need, whether it’s resources at home or overseas. He knows firsthand the sacrifices our active duty military and veterans have made. Serving them will always be a priority for him in Congress.

Congressman Gonzales is fully committed to ensuring that the innocent lives of the unborn are protected. As a father of six, the right to life is a crucial part of his legislative agenda.

  • H.R. 618, the Born Alive Survivors Protection Act, which requires appropriate medical attention for children who survive abortion procedures.

  • H.R. 18, the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act of 2021, which codifies the Hyde Amendment, prohibiting the use of federal funding for abortions.
