IMPROVING PUBLIC HEALTH

Dr. Akilah Weber is a board-certified physician who has worked with thousands of patients in San Diego County. Experience has taught her that bureaucracies can get stuck in their ways, and that sometimes you have to fight for innovation in a crisis. In the State Assembly, Dr. Weber will fight to:

1 - INVESTING IN PRIMARY CARE   Jun-2023- Last update

Millions of Californians do not have a primary care physician, either because they lack insurance, lack information or access to care, or feel that they do not need one. But the evidence shows that many long-term health problems develop over time, and access to primary care can improve outcomes and prevent dangerous conditions later. Dr. Akilah Weber will push for investments in primary care clinics and services to improve public health and reduce long-term costs.

2 - CLOSING THE GAPS IN CARE   Jun-2023- Last update

Californians from different economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds experience extreme differences in healthcare access and quality. These inequities lead to systemic failures, including higher rates of infant mortality, chronic health conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and reduced life expectancy. Dr. Akilah Weber will work to improve equity in healthcare and increase healthcare coverage in underserved areas.

ECONOMIC RECOVERY

COVID-19 has forced thousands of businesses to close, and many local restaurants and shops are struggling to stay afloat. More than 100,000 San Diego County residents have lost their jobs since the pandemic started. Dr. Akilah Weber believes that Sacramento can and must do more to help families now and to help our local economy recover. Dr. Weber will advocate for:

1 - High-impact grants   Jun-2023- Last update

that are designed to help old businesses stay open and help new businesses start up.

2 - Streamlined permitting   Jun-2023- Last update

to enable small business owners to reopen and expand quickly to meet new demand.

3 - Increased direct payments   Jun-2023- Last update

to support struggling families and workers looking for new employment.

4 - Infrastructure investment   Jun-2023- Last update

to put people to work, support local businesses, and rebuild our aging roads and utilities.

She believes that great schools are a foundation for healthy communities, and that investments in schools pay dividends for generations. In the Assembly, Dr. Weber will fight to:

  • MAKE PUBLIC COLLEGES TUITION-FREE so that every student can afford to attend.
  • INCREASE TEACHER SALARIES to attract and retain talented educators.
  • INVEST IN STEM EDUCATION to prepare students for high-paying jobs.
  • CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP by ensuring all students have the tools to learn.
  • DIRECT DOLLARS TO THE CLASSROOM and away from bureaucracy.
  • EXPAND EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION and universal preschool.

A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT

ENDING THE PANDEMIC

Dr. Akilah Weber is a board-certified physician who has worked with thousands of patients in San Diego County. Experience has taught her that bureaucracies can get stuck in their ways, and that sometimes you have to fight for innovation in a crisis. In the State Assembly, Dr. Weber will fight to:

1 - Expand At-Home Testing   Jun-2023- Last update

Collecting a testable sample is easy and can be done by almost anyone at home. Test kits should be widely available at the grocery store or by mail. Public drop boxes would provide a safe alternative to in-person testing.

2 - Provide the First Dose Fast   Jun-2023- Last update

Emerging evidence shows that the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine is extremely effective. To get people vaccinated quicker, California should ensure as many people as possible get at least one dose, with a second dose coming when available.

3 - Never Waste Vaccinations   Jun-2023- Last update

There should never be a dose of this vaccine wasted. If people miss their appointment and excess vaccines are available, eligible people should be rapidly notified so that they can be vaccinated.
