STATEMENT OF PRINCIPLES

  • Like former President Ronald Reagan, the governor believes "the best social program is a productive job for anyone who's willing to work."
  • The private sector -- not government -- creates jobs and opportunities for Utahns.
  • The governor believes in adhering to proven principles to create a fertile field for job creation and economic growth:
    • Regulatory reform;
    • Low, competitive and consistent tax rates;
    • A focus on education to ensure Utah has a job-ready workforce; and
    • Saving for a rainy day.

2015 PUBLIC POLICY PRIORITIES

  • View every proposal or legislation through the prism of what it will or won’t do to grow the economy and empower the private sector to create jobs.
  • Continue working with counties and cities across Utah to modify or eliminate burdensome regulations that impede the flow of commerce and job creation.
  • Direct the Governor’s Office of Economic Development to use all the tools at its disposal to help existing businesses thrive and expand and recruit new businesses to locate or expand their operations in Utah.

RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Three years ago, we set a statewide goal to create 100,000 jobs in 1,000 days. When we reached the deadline August 2014, we had exceeded that goal by more than 10 percent.
  • Utah's private sector job growth rate consistently ranks as one of highest in the nation.
  • Utah's unemployment rate has been cut by more than 59 percent since Governor Herbert took office.
  • Today, fewer Utahns are unemployed than there were before the Great Recession.
  • Nearly 400 burdensome regulations have been modified or eliminated at the state level.
  • The Governor's Office of Economic Development, on average, assists 20 businesses every year to come to Utah or expand their existing operations in the state.
  • The list of businesses that have relocated or expanded operations in Utah include ITT Exelis, eBay, Adobe, IM Flash, EMC Corporation, Edwards Lifesciences, just to name a few.
  • Forbes has named Utah the "Best States for Business and Careers" 4 of the past 5 years.
