Governor Phil Murphy, as he says, “grew up in a family that was middle class on a good day,” the youngest of four children with only one parent who graduated high school. His upbringing – where religion, a strong work ethic, education, and civic awareness were pillars of family life – shaped his values, his priorities, and the leader he is.

COVID-19 Response

  • Led the nation in the administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and considered model state for trending in right direction
  • Launched the Community Contact Tracing Corps
  • Focused on inclusive economic recovery by directing hundreds of millions of federal dollars into small business grants, child care support, rental assistance, and food insecurity
  • Prioritized educational supports through extensive Pre-K-12 and higher education remote learning and reopening guidance and deployed hundreds of millions in federal stimulus funds to school districts and institutions of higher education across the state
  • Created nationally recognized public transit response through NJ TRANSIT for early actions to protect customers and employees including implementing capacity restrictions, installing protective barriers, performing deep cleaning methods, providing staff and riders access to PPE, and leveraging technology
