Peter Welch has been a champion for working Vermonters throughout his career. Since his election to Congress in 2006, he has been widely recognized as a thoughtful and effective legislator who chooses governing over gridlock.

Peter’s record reflects his strong commitment to bringing people together to find common sense solutions to the difficult challenges facing our state and nation. In an era of partisanship, he has worked across the aisle to create jobs, increase access to affordable education and health care, invest in energy efficiency, protect our environment, and care for our veterans.
 

Making College Education Affordable

Higher education is the gateway to the American middle class. Peter is working to make a college degree affordable and reduce the crushing burden of student loan debt.

  • Increasing access to community college
    • Cosponsored the College for All Act to waive tuition and fees for every community college student and qualifying students at public colleges and universities
       
  • Making college affordable
    • Cosponsored the Debt-Free College Act to allow states to receive a 1-1 federal match for higher education appropriations in exchange for achieving debt-free college
       
  • Reducing the burden of student loans
    • Cosponsored of the Pell Grant Preservation and Expansion Act to double the Pell Grant award, index the award to inflation, and make other changes to expand the award for working students and families
    • Advocated for student loan forgiveness for graduates employed in public service jobs
    • Joined House Democrats in calling on President Biden to cancel up to $50,000 in federal student loan debt, per borrower
