Peter Welch

Peter Welch has been a champion for working Vermonters throughout his career. Since his election to Congress in 2006, he has been widely recognized as a thoughtful and effective legislator who chooses governing over gridlock.

Peter’s record reflects his strong commitment to bringing people together to find common sense solutions to the difficult challenges facing our state and nation. In an era of partisanship, he has worked across the aisle to create jobs, increase access to affordable education and health care, invest in energy efficiency, protect our environment, and care for our veterans.
 

Creating Good Jobs and Rebuilding America’s Middle Class

One of Peter’s top priorities in Congress is rebuilding the American middle class and creating job opportunities for American workers.  He has supported multiple programs to shore up our main street businesses and community institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

  • Ensure every American makes a fair wage, has paid leave, and can access affordable childcare and housing
    • Cosponsored the Raise the Wage Act which would raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour
    • Supported the Paycheck Fairness Act to close the gender pay gap
    • Cosponsored the PRO Act to remove barriers and enable interested workers to join or form a union
    • Supported the Build Back Better Act to provide up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave, cap the cost of childcare for many Vermont families at 7% of their income, and invest in affordable rental housing and homeownership
       
  • Renew America’s infrastructure and expand broadband connectivity
    • Advocated for and supported the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) to provide at least $2.2 billion to improve our roads and bridges, invest in clean water, expand advanced broadband, and more to Vermont
    • Introduced the Connecting Americans Act to invest $80 billion to provide affordable broadband to all Americans
       
  • Bring green jobs to the United States
    • Supported the creation of a Civilian Climate Corps to put people to work in climate change mitigation and the clean energy economy
    • Worked toward the House passage of the Build Back Better Act to provide the largest investment in the history of our country to address climate change, including Peter’s Hope for Homes Act to provide tax incentives for home energy retrofits
