Born in Puerto Rico, Jon and his family left in search of opportunity and made their way to Boston. The move allowed his father to finish college at Northeastern University while they lived in subsidized housing and relied on government support. But while Boston offered the promise of expanded opportunity, Jon’s family also found a city facing a scourge of gun violence, struggling schools, and worsening inequity.
Jon’s family came here from Puerto Rico in search of a better life when he was two years old. Jon has organized and advocated for immigrant communities access to education and health care. As an emergency room doctor caring for immigrant families, he witnesses first hand the damage Trump administration policies are inflicting on the health of his patients. Our current leaders are not doing enough to make sure that immigrant families are welcome. Just this month House leadership failed to pass basic non-discrimination and due process protections that would have ensured that every victim of crime can call the police without fear of deportation and that every individual is informed of their rights. Our families deserve leaders that will not desert them in their time of need.
Moreover, although Massachusetts has been a leader in LGBTQ rights, there is more work to do. Jon will fight to protect the trans anti-discrimination law on the ballot this fall and support policies to promote culturally competent care for LGBTQ elders and health care for LGBTQ individuals of all ages.
