Gun Violence & The Second Amendment

Gun violence is a sensitive topic but we must be careful what measures we put in place to solve this issue. Solving this problem, will not come quickly as deep, cultural wounds need to be healed in our country.

First, we must adopt a “tough-on-crime” mentality. We need not go after the law abiding citizen or the firearm, but rather, adopt a tough on crime mentality by making it very difficult for someone to justify committing crime. Taking this one step further, we must continue or efforts to reduce the recidivism rate in our state.

Second, we must equip and support law-enforcement in their duties to keep bad people off the street. We must ensure law-enforcement is not tasked with duties outside their abilities. For example, San Diego County recently established MCRT, or Mobile Crisis Response Team, a team of mental health professionals who alleviate the burden of law enforcement by responding to 911-calls that relate more to cases of mental health, and do not need the expertise of law enforcement. This allows law enforcement to focus their skills and resources to what the communities need most. We must ensure bad people and would-be criminals are kept off the streets, and we must also hold the bad police officers accountable who abuse their power and authority, and ensure they are not being hired and retained.

Third, as an elected representative of the people I will swear an oath to uphold and defend our Constitution which clearly states “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” These are inalienable rights protected by the highest law of the land, and if I am to take my oath seriously, I will ensure the second amendment remains protected. Furthermore, gun laws do little to nothing to deter or stop crime, a criminal by definition does not abide by the law. We must ensure that law abiding citizens have the ability to defend themselves. A crazed psychopath who wants to kill innocent people in a public space or a school would think twice or be stopped much sooner if the law-abiding citizens were able to defend themselves and the most vulnerable amongst us, accordingly.
