David Dodson was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1978 to 1985. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona in 1986. His career experience includes working as an administrator for the California State Board of Equalization and as a real estate appraiser for the Los Angeles County Assessor.
